Strong vertical rhythm...large glass areas...black steel-look frames...precise alignment...masonry and stone façade elements.

Climate: Hot, humid summers and cold, windy winters with snow exposure and strong seasonal temperature swings.

Project Type: Single-family residence requiring custom, large-scale aluminum solutions that combine steel-inspired aesthetics with performance needed for Midwest climate.

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN INTENTION

The goal was not only visual impact, but structural clarity and balance between heavy masonry and aluminum detailing.
In order to meet this design intention, Yawal USA had to:

  • Deliver a steel appearance with slim profiles
  • Incorporate SDL bars consistent with the architectural grid
  • Maintain large uninterrupted glass surfaces

We accomplished those objectives with the following solutions:

1. Industrial Windows

2. Industrial Doors

3. DP180 Performance

4. FA50N Design Line CW

TECHNICAL SCOPE & SPECIFICATIONS

This residence incorporated large-scale openings throughout the façade:

  • Windows up to 9 ft high
  • Curtain wall reaching 14 ft
  • Swing doors up to approximately 9 ft high
  • Sliding doors (DP180 Lift & Slide) over 9 ft high

Selected glazing packages included Planitherm configurations with:

  • SHGC values in the 0.29–0.41 range
  • Light transmission up to 70%

All major elements were factory assembled and glazed where specified. Hardware included hidden hinges, black contemporary handles, multi-point locking systems, and concealed drainage solutions where necessary. These specifications support daylight access while balancing solar control in a climate with hot summers and cold winters.

PROJECT CHALLENGES

Projects of this type and in this geographic region typically require careful coordination in several areas:

  • Wind load considerations for large openings
  • Integration of aluminum systems into heavy masonry
  • Management of drainage for snow and driving rain
  • Control of thermal expansion across large glazed spans
  • Precise structural alignment of curtain wall and multi-panel sliding doors

WHY YAWAL USA SOLUTIONS WERE CHOSEN

  1. Steel-inspired sightlines with modern thermal performance
  2. Large-format configurations beyond typical standards
  3. Multi-panel lift & slide functionality for wide openings
  4. Factory glazing to maintain quality consistency

Yawal USA’s aluminum configurations are engineered to replicate the visual language and grid proportions of traditional steel windows using SDL bars, while delivering improved insulation, sealing performance, and integrated hardware suited to Chicago’s climate conditions.

FINAL RESULT

The completed project presents a strong industrial expression defined by black matte aluminum profiles, structured SDL divisions, large-format glazing, and integrated residential curtain wall elements. The contrast between stone and glass is remarkable. The glazing does not dominate or overpower the masonry—it reinforces the structural rhythm of the building and gives order to the façade.

From a performance perspective, the Yawal USA’s systems support Chicago’s seasonal temperature variation, optimize natural daylight, and maintain controlled solar gain suitable for Midwest climate conditions.
